April’s Interstate Adventure: Exploring Route 66 and the Donkey Town of Oatman, Arizona
This month, our Marketing Manager, Savanna Vandenheuvel, took a scenic detour off Interstate 40 and hit the iconic Route 66 for a little slice of Americana. Her adventure led her to the quirky and charming town of Oatman, Arizona—a hidden gem nestled in the Black Mountains with a rich history and even richer character.
One of the highlights of her trip was learning about the Route 66 Passport program—a fun and interactive way to experience the historic highway. Each year, a new passport book is released featuring Route 66 businesses across several states. Travelers can stop into these participating locations and collect unique passport stamps as keepsakes of their journey. It’s not only a great way to track your travels, but also a point of pride for the featured businesses, each with their own personalized stamp.
While in Oatman, Savanna stopped by Pinnacles, a cozy novelty shop brimming with character. The shop was filled with a fun mix of clothing, handmade crochet trinkets, and a wide array of donkey-themed items—a nod to one of Oatman’s most beloved features.
What truly sets Oatman apart is its status as a donkey sanctuary. That’s right—wild donkeys, lovingly called “burros,” freely roam the town and are a major part of its charm. Many local shops even sell donkey food so visitors can safely interact with these gentle, four-legged hosts.
Between the nostalgic spirit of Route 66, the warm small-town vibe, and the friendly burros of Oatman, this month’s interstate adventure was a memorable one. If you’re ever cruising through Arizona, don’t forget to bring your passport—and maybe a snack or two for your new donkey friends!
